The Preventer
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله وحده
و صلاة و السلام على من لا نبي بعده
Humans go to great lengths to try and prevent negative future consequences; we fear the future because we have no idea what it holds for us, so we try to remedy the fear by taking precautions. For example, a father will start a trust fund for his newborn son in an attempt to ensure that he will have enough money for college; a sick person will go to the doctor to receive medication and ensure his symptoms will not become worse; before any one of us drives, we put our seat belts on, and the list continues. These are the precautions we take in this dunya, but what about the precautions needed to prepare you for the akhirah?
The punishment of the grave is a torment of the akhirah and we need to take precautions now. From the complete and ultimate Mercy of Allah azza wa jal, He has given us a way out of this torment, Alhamdulillah.
عن أبي هريرة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : ” إن سورة من القرآن ثلاثون آية شفعت لرجل حتى غفر له وهي سورة تبارك الذي بيده الملك ” .
وابن ماجه والشيخ الألباني في ” صحيح ابن ماجه ” 3053
Abu Hurayah radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said: Verily, a Surah from the Qur’an consisting of thirty ayat (verses) interceded for a person until he was pardoned (by Allah), and that was Tabarakal-lathee Biyadihil Mulk (Surah Al-Mulk). (Ibn Maajah, graded authentic by Shaykh AlBaani in Saheeh ibn Maajah)
عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال : من قرأ تبارك الذي بيده الملك كل ليلة منعه الله بها من عذاب القبر ، وكنا في عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نسميها المانعة ، وإنها في كتاب الله سورة من قرأ بها في كل ليلة فقد أكثر وأطاب
رواه النسائي ( 6 / 179 ) وحسنه الألباني في صحيح الترغيب والترهيب 1475
On the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “Whoever recites “Blessed is He in Whose control is the entire dominion’…” (Tabaarakal-lathee biyadihil mulk- Surah 67 Al-Mulk) every night, Allah the Exalted and Majestic will protect him through it from the punishment of the grave. And in the time of the Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam we (the Companions) used to call this surah, “The Preventer” (al-maani’ah). And furthermore, it is a surah from the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, that whoever recites it in a night will have accomplished much and will have done something very good. (Good-Narrated in Nasaa’i)
SubhanAllah, here is a precaution that is guaranteed to save whoever fulfills its conditions in the akhirah. Not only can one be saved from the torment of the grave, but Allah ta’ala will also accept the intercession of this surah until its companion enters Jannah! Furthermore, the one who reads this surah will also receive 10 rewards for each letter (30 ayaat, someone can do the math and post it in the comments inshaAllah)…how much easier do you want it?
Also we must remember that reading this surah, or the Qur’an in general involves three things:
1-read with proper tajweed
2-understand the verses
3-implement the verses
Allah ta’ala has indeed made this deen easy upon us, and has made the Qur’an an easy remembrance.

Ma sha Allah, Suratul Mulk has long been one of my favorites and one that I hope to memorize before next Ramadan in sha Allah.

Muslim Apple, just an idea: if you recite suratul Mulk just once every night before you go to sleep (as per the hadith quoted by our dear sister Amatullah–”On the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “Whoever recites “Blessed is He in Whose control is the entire dominion’…” (Tabaarakal-lathee biyadihil mulk- Surah 67 Al-Mulk) every night, Allah the Exalted and Majestic will protect him through it from the punishment of the grave.”) be-ithnil-Lah you should have it memorized by Ramadan…and insha’Allah get double the benefit (one for reciting it at night, and the other for memorzing it–waAllahu A’alem).
